about Collection X
Welcome to Collection X, a community-based website featuring a collection of images, video and audio that is open and accessible to anyone with access to a computer.
Conceived by the Art Gallery of Ontario and its partners and funded by the Virtual Museum of Canada, Collection X functions as an open-source museum created by the public for the public.
It represents an experiment in sharing and community-building that celebrates life and art and encourages everyone to look at the world from different perspectives and to be creative in the process.
what you can do with Collection X
- search and browse artworks, artifacts, videos and audio clips held in public collections
- contribute your own content in the form of images, video and audio to help build the collection
- use tags to describe your content as well as any other content you find
- create exhibitions using your content and/or other people's content
- connect exhibitions together around common themes, issues or ideas
- share your thoughts and engage in dialogue around what you see, read, hear and discover
- subscribe to RSS feeds and podcasts that let you know what other people are doing
language and Collection X
While Collection X can be accessed using either an English or French interface, the site does not distinguish between languages when it comes to content. Users can contribute content or write comments in whatever language they prefer and the results are presented in an integrated way for everyone to see.
preferred browsers
To take full advantage of the features offered by Collection X, you will need a recent browser that fully supports JavaScript and cascading style sheets. We recommend using one of the browsers below:

Many of the advanced features of Collection X, such as the exhibition editor, use JavaScript. While you can still use Collection X without Javascript enabled, it is recommended that you keep it enabled while using Collection X.
cookies
When you sign in to Collection X, the server sends a small cookie to your browser. No personal information of any kind is stored in the cookie, but it is required in order to keep track of your session. Please accept cookies sent from Collection X.
quicktime
Audio and video content on Collection X requires the Apple QuickTime plugin to play. Please download and install QuickTime for your operating system from the link below:
